Cautious Engagement with AI in Education

Thanks to the good people at EDUCAUSE and Auburn College, I have earned an early certificate in “Teaching with Artificial Intelligence 2025.” This is not to be confused as an outright endorsement of generative AI nor its blanket use for pedagogy and higher education. However, cautious and even skeptical understanding of its uses (and abuses) in the teaching realm seems not just prudent but increasingly required; I remain concerned about the ecological and environmental impacts of these tools, as well, and want to monitor their proper utilization. Therefore, I appreciate MCPHS University and the School of Arts & Sciences in making this opportunity available to me and my colleagues. Hopefully, good and responsible things will come of it — for our students, our professions, and our society.
